Alphabet burns $9.1B in Q3 cash as AI capex hits $51.4B; shares fall about 10% premarket
Revenue rose 25% to $127.6 billion and Google Cloud grew 103%, but Alphabet missed estimates and posted its second straight quarter of negative free cash flow.

TL;DR
- Alphabet reported Q3 2026 revenue of $127.6 billion, up 25%, and Google Cloud revenue of $30.7 billion, up 103%, according to its Oct. 28, 2026 earnings release.
- Free cash flow was negative $9.065 billion as purchases of property and equipment reached $51.355 billion, per the release.
- Net income fell to $26.17 billion, or $2.12 per share, from $34.98 billion a year earlier; revenue and adjusted EPS missed LSEG estimates, CNBC reports.

Growth was not the problem. Cash was. Alphabet's third-quarter revenue rose 25% to $127.6 billion, according to the company's earnings release of Oct. 28, 2026. But free cash flow came in at negative $9.065 billion as AI spending kept climbing.
Capex outran operating cash
Net cash from operations was $42.29 billion in the quarter, while purchases of property and equipment reached $51.355 billion, the release shows. It is the second straight negative quarter: free cash flow was $24.551 billion in Q4 2025, $10.116 billion in Q1 2026 and negative $5.855 billion in Q2 2026.
CNBC reports analysts had expected negative free cash flow of only $2.70 billion. Alphabet kept its full-year capex guidance of $195 billion to $205 billion. "We continue to expect our capex to increase significantly in 2027, and will provide further details on our Q4 call," finance chief Anat Ashkenazi told analysts, according to CNBC.
Cloud beat, the rest missed
Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.7 billion, above the $28.7 billion analysts expected, CNBC reports. Search & other grew 12% to $63.35 billion, short of a $64.96 billion estimate. Adjusted EPS was $2.67 versus $3.02 expected, and CNBC calls it the company's first top-and-bottom-line miss in nearly four years.
Net income fell to $26.17 billion, or $2.12 per share, from $34.98 billion, or $2.87, a year earlier. Other income swung to an $8.221 billion expense from $12.759 billion of income, per the release. CNBC adds that long-term debt rose to $125.1 billion from $21.6 billion a year earlier.
Market reaction
Alphabet shares were about 10% lower in premarket trading on Oct. 29, 2026, while Microsoft was nearly 4% higher, CNBC reports. If Alphabet closes more than 9.77% lower, it would be its worst post-earnings reaction since it went public in 2004.
CEO Sundar Pichai pointed to usage: "the Gemini app has reached one billion users—making it the fastest-growing product in Google's history," he said in the release, adding that first-party model APIs are processing nearly 32 billion tokens per minute.
What it means for Web3 teams – Analysis
When the biggest AI spender has to show cash returns, risk appetite across tech tends to tighten, and crypto often trades alongside it. For builders, that usually means investors ask harder questions about revenue and runway. This is not investment advice.
